Sentence


Sentence: When a bunch of words expresses the full meaning, it is called a sentence.

 
"A group of words that makes a complete sense is called a sentence" -- Wren & Martin.


Foundation of Sentence: The sentence consists of two parts.
1.     Subject 
2.     Predicate              
Subject: A Subject is something that is said about a person or object in a sentence.
            Example- Muna went to college. 

Predicate: Everything that is said about the subject is the Predicate. 
             Example- Muna went to college.


Classification of the Sentence: The sentence can be divided into two parts according to meaning and structure. 

Meaning-  
1.     Assertive
2.     Interrogative
3.     Imperative
4.     Optative
5.     Exclamatory 
Structure- 
1.     Simple 
2.     Complex
3.     Compound 

Assertive: The sentence through which a description or a statement is expressed is called an Assertive sentence.
              Structure- Subject+ verb+ Extension.
              Example- Habib is a good student. 

Interrogative: The sentence with which a question is asked is called Interrogative Sentence. 
              Structure- Verb+ Subject+ Extention+ (?)
              Example- What do you want? 

Imperative: The sentence with which the order, advice, request, prohibition, etc. is expressed is called Imperative Sentence. 
                  Structure- Verb/ Adverb+ Extention. 
                                   Always speak the truth.
                                   Please/ Kindly+ Verb+ Extention. 
                                   Please, give me that pen. 

Optative: The sentence with which wishes, blessings, prayers, etc. are expressed is called an Optative sentence.
                    Structure- May+ Subject+ Verb+ Extention.
                     Example- May God helps you.
Exclamatory: Sentence that expresses sudden emotions such as joy, sadness, surprise, hatred, etc. is called an Exclamatory sentence. 
                       Structure- What/ How+ Adjective+ Noun+ Subject+ Verb+ (!) 
                       Example- What a clever boy he is!

Simple: A sentence that has only one subject and only one finite verb is called a Simple verb. 
                        Example- Tom came here when he was fourteen.
Complex: A sentence that contains a principal clause and one or more subordinate clauses is called a Complex sentence. 
                         Example- She hoped that it was true. 
Compound: A sentence in which two or more simple sentences or independent clauses are joined by co-ordination conjunction is called a compound sentence. 
                         Example- You may listen to the teacher or leave the class.
